March Round-up

With a good number of riders in Mallorca for 2 weeks training, the racing season kicked off a little later than normal for VCB.

Matt Dunsbier finished 8th at Ilton 3/4’sĀ  on the 2nd March. Then we had four riders at Llandow crits on 23rd. Lee Davis, Lee Francis, Matt Dale and Jon Gates all rode well with Jon finishing in 8th in a bunch sprint. The following weekend VCB moved across to the road with Jon, Kieran Murphy and Greg Lancaster riding the Bristol South RR. This hilly race (8 times up Stowey) was a hard test but the lads came through really well, with Jon 7th and Greg 8th in a small select front group of around 20 riders!

Kieran continued on the following weekend at Pittards RR, finishing in the front group, just outside the top 20.

A great start to the road season and the guys will be joined by more VCB riders in April as the season gathers momentum!

Bath Winter Series Sucess!

Sunday 9th February 2014
Bath Circuit

Great racing today from three Velo Club riders in the popular winter series. Lee Davies, Andy Callow and Matt Dale all rode in the 4th category race. After 10 minutes Lee broke away with Andy and two other riders joining him. They worked hard together and pulled out a comfortable lead to contest the finish together. In the 4-up sprint Lee finished 3rd with Andy 4th, as a result Lee gained his 3rd category licence. Great racing and congratulations Lee!

Portsmouth ‘Points Chaser’ Crits

Sunday 20th October 2013
Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth

Lee Francis made the trip down to Portsmouth worthwhile – taking his first road win (4th VCB road win of the season) at the Mountbatten Centre! Lee dominated the 4th cat race winning alone with a 30 second lead and in the process moving him up a category to a 3rd. Not content with that, he lined up for the next 3rd cat race straight after and finished a fine 8th! A great end to a good season for both Lee and the club.

Results Round-up

The season has progressed well with a great number of club members competing in all aspects of the racing calendar!

On the road Billy Osmond has had a great season, winning up at Castle Combe in July and gaining his 2nd category licence – congratulations! Another rider who has developed really well over the season is Kieran Murphy, scoring his first win at the beginning of August. Racing at Maindy track circuit, kieran attacked the group with 15 minutes left in the race to solo into victory. The win also gained him his 3rd category licence.

Other club members riding consistently on the road are; Noel, Greg, Matt, Lee, Chris and Dave. All riding well, learning the ropes with progression from all. Noel’s and Greg have had some top ten finishes and Lee has recovered well from his nasty crash at Ilton.

On the time trial front, Lee again has shown consistently with top tens in local and open events, sub 21 ’10’s and a 56 minute 25! Also showing well are Ian Dunn and Alastair McChesney. The evening TT series has been very popular with average numbers around the 25-30 mark, along with lots of improved times.

We’ve had Phil, Simon and Emma on the track, Gavin on the summer cross and not forgetting Henry on the mega Audax trials..!

As we come into the last part of the season we’ve still got much to look forward to with Emma in the World Master track champs, local events, not forgetting our club Hill Climb on the 6th October (details to follow). Plus a great social scene with Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday club rides – 2013 has been a fantastic year, lets keep it rolling!

NB. Apologies if we’ve omitted any results, please keep them coming in.

May Results Round-up

The 2013 season continues to gather pace, with Velo Club memebers riding in local Crits, Road, time Trials, Summer Cross, Track and many other disciplines!

We’re still waiting for that elusive first win of the season, but new member Billy Osmond is going well on the road with recent 3rd and 4th places at Castle Combe evening series. We’ve had a consistant showing of riders at this weekly event along with the Ilton series as well – so well done all, improving all the time! Dave Rutty grabbed a 3rd spot at the Kalas supporting crit on the 26th May also. Another good ride worth mentioning was that of Matt Dunsbier, who travelled up to Carlisle earlier in the month for a 3/4 2-day stage race. Consistent placings of 2nd in the TT and third in the last road stage gave Matt a fine 6th overall in the final classification!

Ian Dunn and Lee Francis are turning out to be a force in the local evening TT series, regularly among the top placings. This looks very promising for our own series which starts on the 4th June.

There’s also the Summer Cross series which has just started with Gavin Thomas and Jon Hirons regular competitors. Gavin recently finishing a great 3rd at one of the Cheltenham rounds!

Lee Francis 2nd at Ilton

Chard Whls Crits
Ilton 17.04.13

As is the theme of the early season events – cold rain and windy conditions greeted the riders at Ilton. Lee Francis put in a superb ride in the 4th cat event. Getting into a 2-man break early on, then staying clear for the remaining of the 45 minute race. He didn’t quite have enough to take the win but a great result none the less.

Other riders competing in this race and the 3rd category race at the same meeting were; Kieran Murphy, Matt Dale, Kieran Blair, Noel Waldren and Dave Rutty.

March Round-Up

Kicking on from 2012, this season looks to be one of the best in recent times for the club. We’ve had a great winter with regular weekly training rides, a trip to Mallorca and many new members.

It’s really encouraging to see so many riders keen to race and within the first month of the season we’ve gained our first win of the season! Noel Waldron won the 4th category race at the Ludgershall circuit in atrocious conditions on the 23rd March. Moving him straight up to 3rd category status. He was abley supported by Greg Lancaster (in 4th) to back up his previous weeks result of 2nd! With Kieran Murphy and Helen Gardiner also racing. Both Kieran and Kieran Blair have raced down on the Portsmouth ‘D’ circuit with top 10 results.

Good Friday saw a number of riders at Castle Combe – many their first race and all riding really well.

Ian Dunn flew the flag on the time trial front with an excellent 7th at the season opener – Severn RC 25m TT.
