Ludgershall Winter Series No.1
14th January 2012

I know it’s hard to believe but we’ve got some keen lads and the ‘Early Season Classics Team(!)’ are out there and racing. Amazing first race outing and Deacon comes away with a bunch sprint win to make Cav envious! Well done to the lads (still trying to get all the details) but believe there was a team of 3, espically Deacon coming back from the cyclepath incident… Great start to the year.

Sunday 25th September 2011
Racing in torrential rain, Dave Rutty scored his second win of the season down near Ilchester on the Ilton circuit promoted by 1st Chard Wheelers. There were many attacks throughout the race from the 60 strong 3/4 bunch, but it was on the penultimate lap that a break stuck. Dave jumped across to the lone escapee to hold off the bunch by 10 seconds and win the sprint for the overall honours!

Making use of a family holiday down in Cornwall, our promising junior roadie Charly rode to a fine 9th place at Portreath.

Thursday 28th July
Simon Davis continued the good run of form for VCB with a fine 9th place tonight. Although he’s been saying he was on holiday for a week in Cornwall, rumour has it he was on an intense week long training camp!

The race came down to a bunch sprint with Simon using his knowledge and experience to fend off falling riders and flying bikes to claim his position. Gavin got slightly more held up but finished safely in 12th place. Charly rode the E/1/2 race and excelled in the high speed on junior gears to finish in the main bunch!

Thursday 21st July
Continuing the good attendance by VCB riders, Charly Bradley and Dave Rutty were joined this week by Deacon Cutterham, who has just recently returned from active duty in Afganistan. It’s great to have him back safe after been ‘blown off’ a roof whilst there!

The actual race proved to be the first success of the season with Dave and Charly on the attack from the gun, after the initial laps the bunch all came back together. At the mid-way point Dave attacked again and was joined by two riders, this proved to be the right mix and the three (mainly the other two!) pulled out an unasellable lead. The finish came down to a 3-up sprint with Dave taking the win! Charly and Deacon finished safely in the bunch.

Junior rider Charly Bradley rode his first road race on this rolling Dartmoor circuit. He rode really well, getting across to the lead group when the race split then jumping the group in the last kilometre. However the prefect ending didn’t happen and he got swallowed up with 200m to go but still finished in a creditable 15th place. Well done!

Big up and enough respect goes to our new Roadie – Gavin Thomas for gaining his first British Cycling pointat Castle Combe!! He came 9th in the bunch sprint behind lone escapee Freddie Lewton. Paul Parker and Dave Rutty both finished in the bunch.

Charly Bradley and Dave Rutty both rode this race. A good fast race is blustery conditions, Dave got across to the chasing group and got second in the sprint for 5th place with Charley riding well and finishing in the bunch.

Great turn out of velo club riders for these races – Graig English, Chris Paling, Simon David, Gavin Thomas and Paul Parker all riding! We’re fast becoming the biggest club in Bristol with racing numbers set to continue!

All the riders acquitted themselves really well in bunches of up to 150 riders! Unfortunately Graig got held up with a crash but all the others riders finished safely in the bunch sprints.

Another good attendance of velo club riders, this time it was Gavin’s first race and what a race to start off with! Eight times up Stowey hill proved to be a difficult race but the guys did well with Gavin Thomas and Paul Parker finishing in the mid-30s. David Rutty pulled out on the last lap to watch the finish!
